Understanding Motion and Timing

Animation is more than just moving things around. To create the illusion of life, one must understand motion and timing. To understand motion, one must observe the way things move in space. A good reference to study motion is look at the way it is done in the classic animated films. Observe the use of drag, squash and stretch, the rotation of objects, and the way people walk. To understand timing is to give life to your work. Proper timing affects the mood and pacing of the animation. Knowing what takes place at the right time for each action is important. If the timing is off the audience will not read the actions correctly. Proper timing of actions will draw the audience's attention. One way to know proper timing is act out the character scene in front of a mirror. This will give you an understanding of how things move in relationship with time.

The basic theory of animation concepts to study are given below, which are:

Center of Mass

Squash and Stretch

Wave Theory/Line of Action

Knowing these concepts and techniques,in depth, will help you in your animation efforts.
